Interview with Elize Pretorius from Rustenburg Hospice

1.      What is the function of the Hospice Shop?

The main function of our hospice shops is to generate funds, as this is our organisations main source of income.  The shops also help to raise awareness of our organisation and the services we provide.

 2.      What can be donated to the Hospice Shop?

The following can be donated – clothing, shoes, linen/bedding (new or second hand), ornaments, kitchenware, toiletries, electrical appliances (working or not), computers, printers, tools and furniture. Written off and damaged goods from retailers are most welcome. Acknowledgement by letter and our PBO number will enable them to claim back from SARS.

 3.      Where can you find the Hospice Shop?

The 3 hospice shops are situated at 48 Steen Street and at the Phokeng Plaza in Phokeng. All donations can be dropped off at our receiving depot at 195 Bethlehem Street.

 4.      Who benefits from the Hospice funds?

Monies generated by the shops also go towards the home-based palliative care of our patients and their families. Our services are rendered free of charge.

Here is the story of an unhappy person in Rustenburg.  All Rustenburgers, please see this as a warning to watch out for.

“I rented a town house in Rustenburg through Al-Mar rentals. After renting for a year and a half, the owner gave me the option to purchase the property and we signed a purchase contract which at the same time ended the rental contract as the purchase transaction began.

Two weeks ago the property registered on my name, I am the new owner. When the property was successfully registered on my name, I contacted Alma du Toit from Al-Mar Rentals, asking for my deposit which I paid initially upon renting the property. She refused to return my deposit and still hasn’t and she has no grounds whatsoever to do so.

I am the new owner of the property so if there were damages to the property, giving her grounds to deduct from the deposit (if I evacuated as a lessee), it would’ve made sense but it is not applicable. Nevermind refusing to return my deposit for no apparent reason.

Reason for the fashion show:

We want to organize this charity event because we feel it is our responsibility to reach out to the community and to make a difference.  Together we can make this charity event a reality and a huge success.

Aim of the fashion show:

This charity fashion show has multiple aims.  The main aim is to raise money and awareness for the WEE-CARE PROJECT.  This fashion show is also about giving people and businesses in and around Rustenburg the opportunity to promote themselves. This event offers them a great opportunity for exposure.

What to expect:

The fashion show will consist out of cocktail, evening and bridal wear along with a variety of entertainment for everybody to enjoy.  Refreshment will be provided.  There will be plenty of lucky draws with fantastic prizes and various business exhibition stands.

Be entertained by the Lebone II College Choir, The Royal Bafokeng Youth Choir, The Hoërskool Rustenburg Choir, The Rustenburg Noord Choir as well as the Lebone II Junior Choirs, Marimba Band, Junior Orchestra, Senior Band, Dancers as well as various instrumental and vocal soloists. CATERING: You are welcome to bring your own picnic baskets (Strictly no alcohol, please! Lebone II reserves the right to search patrons on entrance.). Picnic hampers will be sold at the school and prices range from R30 to R80. The hampers will be limited so it will work on a first come, first serve basis. A tuck shop will also be available.

BONUS!: Apart from the above-mentioned entertainment, your ticket also gets you automatic entrance into various lucky draws during the evening. The main prizes of the lucky draw are 2 nights at the 5 star Royal Marang Hotel or 2 nights at the 4 star Feathered Nest Guest Lodge.

The Longest Breakfast Table

The Highlight of the Rustenburg charity calendar.  I visited the event for the first time since i got to Rustenburg.  What a awesome experience did i have while taking the video and photos of the event.  People from all walks of life came together to have breakfast for a good cause.  From businesses sending their staff to pastors and their church family enjoying the morning.  I had my hands full trying to get the “BIG picture” of the event.

Table going on and on and on for meters and meters. You will definitely get good exercise walking around this table.  The food that Food Worx prepared looked mouth watering and everyone was entertained by musicians and dancers from I-dance studio.  I recommend that next year you must put this event on your calendar.

Interview with Helené Hoogenboezem from FAMSA

1. What is the purpose of FAMSA?
The purpose of FAMSA is to develop and strengthen families. Families are the core unit of the community. If there is a problem in a family it influences the community.

2. What is the focus of the FAMSA community development programmes ?
Is to strengthen the individual, because they are part of a family. The programmes gives the individual various skills to cope in their everyday situations. Programmes fall in the following categories: Life skills, Fatherhood, Parenting and Family Violence Awareness.

3. Who is counselled by FAMSA?
Any person who struggles to cope and feels he or she is stuck and can’t go further.

4. What does Employee Support involve at FAMSA?
It is divided into 2 groups. The first group is the FAMSA staff. They are sent on training courses to empower them to help the people better that comes to FAMSA for help.

The second group is Corporations/ Businesses that are helped by programmes and counselling in the work place.

5. What is the “Education for Living” programme that is done at schools?
It helps the student to handle different life situations that he or she encounters like conflict, communication, family problems, relationships, peer pressure and HIV.

 6. How is the work of FAMSA funded?
FAMSA is a non-profit organization and is dependent on funds from people and organizations that give donations.  The Salaries of FAMSA staff is paid by the Department of Social Development.  The office building is paid by Impala Platinum.  FAMSA also gets funds through charity events like the “Longest Breakfast Table” which is held every year.

The Elderly Care Fund’s main purpose is to deliver a holistic service to all retired employees (60 years and older) of the SAPS and to prepare current serving members for retirement.

Retired former NW Provincial Commissioner, Maj Genl Solly Moloi is actively participating in all the activities of the ECF and is very proud of the fact that there are presently 5 (five) members of “Club 80” in and around Rustenburg.

Recently, ms Echaboth  Somphekwa, known as Lizzy, had the privilege of joining this “exclusive” Club, when she became 80 years old.  Her husband, mr Nthakeng Somphekwa has also been a member of “Club 80’s” since 2005.  The elderly all joined in the fun at Tlhabane House.  A present from the ECF in Pretoria was handed over to ms Somphekwa by Rev B M Mokoma.  Ref R H (Hezekiël) Khetsi , a retired Police chaplain, and the current chairperson of the ECF in Rustenburg, welcomed everyone to the joyous occasion.

A lovely cake (sporting 80 candles!) was baked for the birthday lady.  The Somphekwa couple are from Rhenosterkraal, Magong, Mogwase.
