Where did the power go?
It is no secret that Rustenburg has been experiencing power supply interruptions since the 11th January 2013. These interruptions affects a sizeable amount of residential, commercial and light industrial areas. These interruptions were caused by an explosion that occurred at the Munic electrical substation, off Zendeling Street. Severe damage was caused on the 33 000 volt switchgear. Subsequently, the substation had to be isolated from the entire 33 kv electricity network of Rustenburg Local Municipality.
Temporary measures have been taken in order to solve the problem for the time being but these measures are operating at a very high risk. This means any cable fault on the 33kv system supplying Munic and Boschdal substation will take longer than normal to repair due to the abnormal operation of the network. It is anticipated that the lasting solution to this dilemma will be found in the next six to eight (6 – 8) months due to the difficulty in finding the new switchgear needed to rebuild the damaged Municipal substation.
Areas that are affected are: East End (Oos Einde), Waterfall Mall, Safari Tuine extensions, Cashan extensions, all developments in the Waterfall East and part of Protea Park, which consume about 40% of the electricity supply in the Rustenburg area. The Executive Mayor, Cllr Mpho Khunou, would like to apologize on behalf of the entire Council, for the inconvenience caused. They are working to get the situation under control and to restore services back to normal. All our readers please keep posted for a upcoming article on the residents of Rustenburg feedback on how they experience the water and power crisis in Rustenburg.
Today is excatly day 7 without a drop of water in Cashan4. During the same time period there has also been two days without power and numerous occations with hours of no power. This is totally unacceptable!!! What’s going on?? Are we going to get discount on our monthly electricity and water bill??
Thanks for your response Riana. Rusties is busy investigating the problem. We are here to serve the community of Rustenburg.

We live in Cashan 5 and haven’t had water for a week now, apart from the electricity that goes on and off about 3 to 4 times a day. This is totally ridiculous and when you phone the municipality they either don’t answer the phone or I have heard 4 differnt versions of why we don’t have water. So I am drawing a conclusion that everything they say is a load of crap!!!
I stay in Geelhoutpark, and also have problems with Electricity for the past few days and water presure is so bad (if there is water), we cant shower and if u want to run water into the bath it takes for ever. It’s fine if there is problems for a day or two but this is not fun anymore.
Insane that it will take that long to find a permanent solution! Don’t engineers plan ahead and have backup systems in place to ensure very little disruptions?
Since Sunday we did not have water out our house in Cashan Ext. 4 . It is very inconvenient. We struggle to prepare food and keep clean. Then we had no power for 2 days.
Our electricity on prepaid has been on and off for the past few days and we haven’t had any water for the past 3 days to be specific. It is very tough to live without water, especially since we have a 2month old baby. 🙁
